Simple question: we all have cars that we lust after, sometimes planning on how we can afford them, but there are some cars that, as much as we love, we go “nah, I could never own that”. Either due to money, practicality, or rarity, there’s something stopping us. So, what’s that car for you?
Mine would be the DBS. Beautiful car and I’ve loved it since Casino Royale came out, but I don’t think I could ever own one. Pricewise I could probably afford to buy one, but owning an expensive car from a smaller brand, as nice as Doug makes it sound, could spell disaster. Plus, it probably wouldn’t mesh great with my lifestyle, and knowing I couldn’t drive it during winter would really suck.

I have 2 on my list, both are affordable. Both be great to drive, but could no deal with lack/minimal of cargo capacity.
A 3rd gen MR2.
and a Saturn Sky Redline.

I’ve been following that Lotus very recently. I think they r good buy now. Super cheap but numerous obv things make them somewhat prohibitive. That’s a good speculative car, possible investment, 2 make w another enthusiast is my idea. A decent white example just sold 4 17k. It was in Autoweek. I’m currently fishing.

ST twins, NSX, S2k, E60 M5, any Jag V12, any Aston, Elise, 500 Abarth, Diablo, Supra, 944, BRZ, Miata, TT, Chevy SS
I love all these, but I just couldn’t see myself owning any of them

The only real answer. B5 S4 Avant, APR Stage III preferably.

Great question. I ask myself this all the time when a car piques my interest. I would love an understated American family sedan that has a v8 and a stick. The only one that fits the bill right now is the SS, but I just can’t spend that much money on a depreciable asset, even if I can afford it. Sure, it may end up holding its value in the long run, but certainly less so if you put daily driver miles on it.
On the thriftier side, I try to convince myself that a 2011 Saab 9-4x or 9-5 would be a good idea. I love their looks. But they are getting older, and some parts may get hard to find especially on the 9-4x.
In the end I’ll chicken out and buy a two year old domestic luxury barge for 50% off MSRP. That 9-5 is still intriguing though...

Any Ferrari. Even an old one I might be able to afford one day. I prefer lower levels of drama and less impending doom in my relationships.

Most likely a Mk4 Supra TT, manual. Even an Auto is a shitload of money these days.

Dodge Viper for me. I love the looks and knowing they exist, but for 100k I’d have a hard time ever wanting to own one.

Any Porsche or any Alpina.
Porsche I don’t think I’ll ever make enough to own one, and Alpinas other than the B7 they don’t sell any other here.

Caterham Super Seven. Simply due to the fact that the genuine models all have no roof. So unless the earth decides to not have rain, I know I can’t drive the car on the regular without the risk of interior water damage.
Luckily, thats my 3rd favorite car so you know...I have to get my first 2 favorite cars first before worrying about that :P

A Testarossa or 512TR used to be my dream car, but I seem to have found my limits for old car ownership with a mere late 90s F355. 50% more cylinders and about 10 more years of age means around 50% higher running costs.
On top of that, more primitive ECUs mean more temperament, and also prices seem to have run way TF out of my reach in the past 3 years.
Still I’d quite like to be able to drive one someday.

Citroen SM. A good one is currently worth at least $60,000. Don’t ever expect being able to swing that much. On top of the cost, I’d have to live somewhere with a garage that knows how to work on incredibly temperamental old Citroens (ideally LA, which has a garage dedicated solely to SMs that’s been going for decades).

Jaguar F-Type. It is a beautiful car and I am really happy Jag made it. Having said that, when you look at the other cars in the price segment, it just doesn’t do it. I’d buy many of them for one reason or another, it just sort of gets shuffled to the bottom of the list.

Unfortunately that would probably be the RS6 C6 Avant. I just can’t get them in the US and even if I imported it by the time it’s 25 years old they will not be worthy of fixing up.

Why not? Some will depreciate to (kind of) affordability pretty soon.

Friend of mine had to swear off redheads after he was stabbed... twice. In his defense, he never had a discussion with either of them about being exclusive. It was one stabbing per redhead before he gave that up.
